Vaginal discharge odor is caused by a condition called Bacterial Vaginosis, which is the most common vaginal infection millions of women suffer from. Using the word “suffer” may sound overly dramatic, but when one is miserable and uncomfortable with her own body, then a word like suffer is totally appropriate. That unpleasant fishy smell is the most common first symptom of bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial Vaginosis, also called BV, is a condition in women where the balance of bacteria normally found in the vagina is disrupted. Nobody really understands what the cause of this imbalance is.

BV is usually not serious. However, without treatment in some cases, it can lead to more serious infections in the uterus and fallopian tubes. Bacterial vaginosis may get better without treatment; but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that all women with symptoms seek treatment to avoid serious complications that may include a much greater predisposition for sexually transmitted diseases and/or pelvic inflammatory disease. The CDC doesn’t consider bacterial vaginosis to be sexually transmitted; so male partners are not usually treated.
It is often treated with oral medications. These drugs may relieve the symptoms; but may not in many cases, lead to a cure.
What it is not
You cannot get BV from toilet seats, bedding, swimming pools, or from touching objects around you.
Women sometimes confuse BV with yeast infections. Yeast does not look, nor smell, nor feel like bacterial vaginosis. The difference is that a vaginal bacteria infection will cause a nasty discharge from the vagina as well as a foul odor. This is merely due to the growth of bacteria.
Some people think that bacterial vaginosis seems to be linked in some way to having sex. But researchers don’t think you can “catch” it from a male sex partner. The reason it may be linked to sex is that sometimes the odor isn’t even noticed until after sexual intercourse. BV doesn’t usually cause significant irritation of the vulva or pain during intercourse. If you have these symptoms, be sure to see your doctor so he or she can check for other possible serious causes.
Prevention and Causes
BV prevention requires open communication with your healthcare provider, as well as your sexual partner.
Bacterial vaginosis usually happens in women who douche frequently or have other conditions that lower the normal amount of vaginal lactobacilli. Common conditions that possibly lower lactobacilli include frequent use of antibiotics, harsh chemical irritants in douches, or the overuse of feminine-hygiene products.
