Bacterial Vaginosis
Bacterial vaginosis is a mild infection of the vagina caused by an imbalance of the bacteria normally found in the vagina. There is usually a lot of bacteria – some of it “good” and some of it “bad”. Vaginosis develops when an external factor disrupts the balance between beneficial and harmful bacteria. This causes a foul smelling vaginal discharge odor, a thin green or grayish white or yellow vaginal discharg that adheres to the vaginal wall.

This foul smelling fishy vaginal odor is usually the first sign of infection, and it’s terribly embarrassing.
The reason for this imbalance is not fully understood. There are several possible factors that may cause it.
Possible causes:
- Frequent douching and chemical irritants
- Use of feminine hygiene products
- Use of antibiotics
- Using an IUD (intra uterine device)
- Cesarean section
- Hysterectomy
- Hysterosalpingography (anx-ray test)
- Endometrial biopsy
- Abortion
- Spermicidal products
- Allergic reaction from soaps, detergents, facric softeners
- Multiple sexual partners
- New sexual partner
- Female sexual partner
- Even if never had sexual intercourse
- Smoking
Possible results of BV are:
- Reoccurring vaginosis – even worse next time
- Burning during urination
- Itching around the outside of the vagina
- Soreness of the vagina and vulva
- If pregnant - premature labor and delivery
- Amniotic fluid infection
- Premature rupture of membranes
- Low birth weight of babies
- Postpartum uterine infections in mother
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- More vulnerable to STIs and HIV
BV is usually not serious. However, if left untreated it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and other serious complications.
BV usually clears up within 2 or 3 days with the use of antibiotics, but treatment must continue for 7 days. Sometimes the use of vaginal gels is recommended.
Even women who are not sexually active may also get this vaginal discharge odor. The good news is that it usually doesn’t affect women after menopause.
It’s Not Yeast Infection
Yeast infection and bacterial vaginosis are two different problems. Most women mix them up because they are the two most common vaginal infections, but BV is the most prevalent. Yeast infection does not look, smell, nor feel like BV.
